By J.P. Pomare
Let me begin by saying this has been one of my favorite reads this year. I absolutely loved it! From the start, you'll be drawn to the eerie quality of the scenes. The suspense is so satisfying. You're on edge wondering is she okay, what's happening, what kind of ____ is this? The best part is it just keeps on going until the very end.
We follow Evie a seventeen-year-old girl in her present day captivity at the hands of Jim.
Jim remains a mysterious character throughout much of the book. He is terrifying. We know so little about what's going on and are periodically given clues when Evie experiences a flashback. The flashbacks provide hints to why the pair escaped from their hometown and wound up together in a small town. Throughout the book Evie begins to discover clues, and those provide insight into Jim's character. Jim is not a good guy. Like I said, I was stealing moments to be alone with this story. It’s so hard to review this without ruining it for you- so read it!
The author made some odd choices toward the end, but overall they helped me understand the depth of Evie's mental state. However, it also sets the stage for some glaring inconsistencies both in the plot and characters.
Yet, I forgave J.P. Pomare. I really didn't mind because when he got it right, he knocked it out of the park. I will reread this book, and I would also pay to see an adaptation.
