Summary

In this psychological suspense, we follow makeup artist Jessica Farris. Only in her twenties, Jessica is burdened with financial responsibilities she cannot meet on the job no matter how hard she tries. Frustrated and a bit jealous of her clients who seem to have it made Jessica obtains a job lead through less than ethical means.

Though reluctant at first she is seduced by the prospect of making an easy $500. All she has to do is participate in a case study and answer a few questions. Jessica's honesty and questionable ethics pique the interest of Dr. Shields the Psychologist running the study. With each session, Jessica gains favor and her performance eventually leads to her graduating to an exclusive level within the clinical study.

Hand-picked and cherished by Dr. Shields Jessica is now the subject of more elaborate studies that take her further and further outside the office and her comfort zone. Dr. Shields' deviously exploits Jessica by using her faulty moral compass against her. When she begins to question Dr. Shields' motives she realizes it may be too late.

Spoil-Free Review

I found this book to be very slow-paced and mind-numbingly predictable. What it lacked in storytelling it somehow made up with suspense as promised. Although, the reader doesn't know when"the event" will occur we have a pretty good idea of what might happen and why.

I knew exactly what Dr. Shields was capable, but the motivation to orchestrate such an elaborate and costly study should have been fleshed out throughout the book. That would have made it a solid 4 stars on average.

Why not 5 stars?

We hear stories like this everyday. As a psychological suspense novel, I expect and prefer a more nuanced neurosis.
